After breakfast on December 28, 2009, we birded Semaphore Hill, the one mile road connecting Canopy Tower with the main highway. This turned out to be the birdiest day of the trip (over 108 different species). Walking down Semaphore Hill was a wonderful birding experience (one which I wish we could have repeated). Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this partly cloudy, humid morning. We photographed this male White-shouldered Tanager as it perched on some shrubbery. The male Tachyphonus luctuosus panamensis is black with white shoulders and a pale lower mandible. The White-shouldered Tanager found in Western Chiriqui belongs to a different race, nitidissimus, and has a golden crown patch and reduced white in the wing.
