El Valle is located within the crater (600 m above sea level) of the second largest inhabited dormant volcano in the world. From our lodge in El Valle, we traveled to bird the area around Cerro Gaital, a 1,000 m high mountain. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with partly cloudy skies and intermittent rain. This photograph shows a side profile of a female White-tailed Emerald (hummingbird). This species can be distinguished from the similar Stripe-tailed Hummingbird by the lack of a cinnamon wing patch.
