After breakfast on January 1, 2010, we drove to Plantation Road to bird. During the construction of the Panama Canal, a three mile improved road was constructed from the town of Empire to the Las Cascadas Plantation. This was the first paved road in the interior of Panama. The trail we birded is the remnant of the this road. Near the entrance to the trail we saw Yellow-backed Oriole parents busily taking care of their young. This is a photograph of one of the parents with an insect for its young. Temperatures were in high 70's to low 80's on this sunny, hot and humid morning.
