Early (0430) in the morning on December 31, 2009, we drove from Canopy Tower and headed towards Colon on Panama's Atlantic coast. We crossed the Panama Canal locks at Gatun to get to the west side of the Canal so that we could bird along Achiote Road, one of central Panama's premier birding locations. Temperatures were already in the low 80's with high humidity. The photograph shows a Yellow-headed Caracara as it flew over us. Achiote Road is a winding two lane road with a lot of fast moving traffic and, as far as I am concerned, a dangerous place to bird since I'm always looking up to find birds and not paying attention to ambient conditions like traffic.
