After a morning of birding at Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012, we drove to a beach area near Club Garza Real while on our way to Pucusana to look for shore birds. Belcher's (Band-tailed) Gull, Larus belcheri, was one of the birds that we photographed. Slightly smaller than a Kelp Gull, the white headed alternate adult form shown here has a red tipped yellow bill, white nape and underparts, and black upperparts that are separated from a black tail by a white band. (Note: basic adult form has a black head.) Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity.
