We spent the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Black-capped Donacobius, Donacobius atricapilla, as it flew nearby. A yellow iris is prominent on the bird's black head. Broad white tips to the tail feathers and narrow white bases to the inner webs of the primaries are visible in flight. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this humid morning with overcast skies.
