We were up and birding early on the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). The Black-collared Hawk, Busarellus nigricollis, was one of the first birds that we saw. The head is a pale creamy to white color that contrasts with its cinnamon body color, black crescent on the upper chest and black spots on the upper breast, primaries and tail. It has curved talons with toes that are spiked on the underside to grasp its prey (similar to an Osprey). Temperatures were in the upper 70's with hazy skies and high humidity.
