We were on a pseudo-pelagic trip that departed from Pucusana the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, and took us around some of the rocky islands in the bay and Pacific Ocean to bird. Brad photographed a Blackish-Oystercatcher, Haematopus ater, to show the bird's features: blackish plumage, reddish-orange bill, and pinkish legs and feet. A red wattle can be seen surrounding this bird's yellow iris. Blackish Oystercatchers exhibit rapid direct flight using shallow wing beats. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with sunny skies and high humidity. Individual birds may live for more than fifteen years. A group of oystercatchers is known as a 'parcel' (great for crossword puzzle solvers!).
