We birded down river from the city of Requena along Supay Creek the morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2012. A Chestnut-eared Aracari, Pteroglossus castanotis, was perched where we could get good unobstructed views of it. This is a very common toucan in Peru. It is a large Aracari with chestnut coloration on the sides of its head and a single red band across yellow underparts. The rump area is bright red, and the turquoise blue around the pale iris stands out against the bird's black cap and nape. Toucans are known for their large and often gaudily patterned bills. This species is no exception with its dark base to the maxilla which contrasts nicely with pale serrations along the cutting edge of the bill. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with overcast skies and high humidity.
