We birded down river from the city of Requena along Supay Creek the morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2012. This Chestnut-eared Aracari, Pteroglossus castanotis, was perched out in the open giving us a good look at its characteristics. It has chestnut coloration on the sides of the head and a single red band across its yellow underparts. The rump area is bright red, and the turquoise blue around the pale iris stands out against the bird's black cap and nape. A dark lower mandible contrasts with pale serrations along the bill's cutting edge providing an interesting bill pattern. Temperatures were in the low 80's with overcast skies and high humidity.
