We spent the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, birding along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). Brad photographed a Chestnut Woodpecker (Celeus elegans) as it inched its way up a tree trunk. This is a chestnut colored bird with darker upperparts and slightly lighter underparts. Its flanks and rump are a yellowish-buff color. The bill is also yellowish. The female lacks a red malar stripe. Its diet is comprised of ants, termites, and fruit. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this humid morning with hazy skies and high humidity.
