We birded along Yanallpa Creek, the narrowest and smallest creek that we traversed during our Amazon journey, the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2012. Brad photographed a Crane Hawk (Geranospiza caerulescens) that was perched in a river edge forest. This slender gray hawk has long reddish tarsi, a long black and white banded tail, and a small-headed appearance. Irides are reddish, and the cere is a dull color. It forages by reaching into cavities and crevices with its long tarsi to extract prey (snakes, nesting birds, bats)...sometimes flapping its wings to maintain its balance. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with clear skies and high humidity.
