We spent the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, birding along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). Brad photographed a Crimson-crested Woodpecker (Campephilus melanoleucos) that was using its tail to balance itself on a slanted perch. This is a large, strong-billed, crested woodpecker that chisels, pries, and drills wood in search of insects. The female has a black fronted, red shaggy crest. A black line extends from the bill to the throat. Upperparts are black, and underparts are white heavily barred with black. White lines run down the sides of the black throat and shoulders and meet in a V on the back. Their diet consists of ants, termites, small vertebrates, and caterpillars supplemented with berries. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this humid morning with hazy skies and high humidity.
