The morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2012, we birded along the Ucayali River and along Supay Creek, which is located down river from the city of Requena. Brad photographed a Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Campephilus melanoleucos, as it inched its way up a snag. Underparts are buff with black barring. A white stripe runs down the side of the neck and forms a closed 'V' on the bird's back. The female has a broad white stripe that extends from the base of the bill across the cheek and runs down the side of the neck to the chest. The front portion of the crest is black. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with overcast skies and high humidity.
