The morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2012, we birded along the Ucayali River and along Supay Creek, which is located down river from the city of Requena. Brad photographed a Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Campephilus melanoleucos, as it perched in the river-edge forest. Underparts are buff with black barring. A white stripe runs down the side of the neck and forms a closed 'V' on the bird's back. The male has an all-red crest with a white and black topped lentical shaped area at the mid-cheek level. Black plumage extends from the base of the bill to the chin and throat. Remaining upperparts are black. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with overcast skies and high humidity.
