After birding at Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes (Lima, Peru) the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012, we drove to a beach area near Club Garza Real to look for shore birds while on our way to Pucusana. The Elegant Tern (center with the orangish-yellow bill), Thalasseus elegans, is shown here. It is the most common and widespread orange-billed tern in Peru. The black of its crest that comes down from the crown extends through the eye and creates a small black smudge in front of the eye. (The black crest stops at the eye of a Royal Tern.) Temperatures were in the mid-80's with hazy skies and high humidity.
