After lunch and a siesta on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, we headed downstream on the Ucayali River to El Dorado Creek for some late afternoon birding. This was one of the better views of a Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth, Bradypus variegatus, that we got while in the Amazon. The body is covered with grayish-brown to beige-colored fur with darker brown fur on the throat and the sides of the face. A dark stripe of fur runs through the eyes and cheek on a paler face. Brown-throated sloths sleep 15 to 18 hours a day and are only active for brief periods during the day or night. It can rotate its head 270 degrees! Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies.
