After dinner on Thursday, January 19, 2012, we went out on a night birding expedition at the junction of the Maraņon and the Ucayali Rivers. Spotting two Great Potoos, a Pauraque, a Ladder-tailed Nightjar, and a Striped Owl made us realize how lucky we were. These Giant Water-Lilies (Victoria amazonica) were everywhere in the quiet, shallow waters that we explored. The plant's large green leaves lie flat on the surface of the water. Leaves can be up to 9.8 feet in diameter and are suspended from a 22.9-26.2 foot long stalk. Evening temperatures were in the mid-70's with partly cloudy skies and some visible stars and lots of heat lightening.
