This is a photograph of four Franklin's Gulls, Leucophaeus pipixcan, that flew over us while we were birding Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012. A small, black headed gull, it sometimes shows a rosy cast on its chest and abdomen during breeding season. A white band on the wingtips is a distinguishing feature. It is a common sight to farmers on north America's interior prairie lands as it follows plows to eat exposed insects, worms, and mice. Temperatures were in the low 80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity.
