Brad photographed a Gray-hooded (headed) Gull, Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus, as it roosted on the bank of a marshy area in the Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes that we birded the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012. Our final destination for the day was to be the fishing village of Pucusana which is located 60 km south of Lima in southern Lima Province. The Gray-hooded is a common resident along coastal marshes in Peru. A white primary flash is present in all plumages. Outer primaries contain more black than those of an Andean or Brown-hooded Gull. Legs and bill are red. A pale gray hood is present in alternate plumage. Temperatures were in the low 80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity (typical for the area).
