Brad photographed a juvenile Great Grebe, Podiceps major, as it swam in a nearby marsh while we were birding the Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012. Our final destination for the day was to be the fishing village of Pucusana which is located 60 km south of Lima in southern Lima Province. The Great Grebe is found in southern South America with a disjunct population in northwestern Peru. It is found on lakes and marshes during the breeding season. Outside of breeding season it moves to the coast or the open sea. Temperatures were in the low 80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity (typical for the area).
