We spent the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, birding along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). This Green-backed (White-tailed) Trogon, Trogon viridis, was very accommodating in that it perched out in the open. The belly is an orangish-yellow color. Males have black cheeks and throat with the rest of the neck, head, and upper chest blackish with an iridescent purplish-blue hue. The back is an iridescent green that blends into a purplish-blue on the rump. The upper tail is a bronzy green narrowly tipped with black. The male's undertail is patterned broadly white on black. The eye ring is blue. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with hazy skies and high humidity. Use the undertail pattern to help distinguish males from females and species from species.
