After lunch and a siesta on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, we headed downstream on the Ucayali River to El Dorado Creek for some late afternoon birding. We had the good fortune to spot a group of three Hoatzins, Opisthocomus hoazin, including this one that we photographed. A side view of the bird and its feather patterning and coloration is shown as the bird perched in a bush near the water's edge. It is mainly a herbivore, can barely fly, and typically has an unpleasant odor (due to the fermenting processes that take place in its crop). [We never got close enough to have to wrinkle our nose!] Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies.
