After lunch and a siesta on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, we headed downstream on the Ucayali River to El Dorado Creek for some late afternoon birding. We had the good fortune to spot a group of three Hoatzins, Opisthocomus hoazin, including this one that we photographed as it floundered/crashed on to the next bush when our boat got too close for its comfort. It provided us an excellent view of the feathers on its underwing and tail. The Hoatzin is mainly a herbivore, can barely fly (see photo), and typically has an unpleasant odor (due to the fermenting processes that take place in its crop). [We never got close enough to have to wrinkle our nose!] Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies.
