One of the first birds that we saw the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, along Sapote Creek was a Hooded Tanager. Nemosia pileata was perched high in the canopy of a várzea woodland. An Amazonian species, it has yellow legs and irides. The female's underparts are whitish with a light buffy wash on the breast and upper chest while upperparts are a blue-gray color. Prominent white lores and a pale lower mandible are evident. Temperatures were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
