One of the first birds that we saw the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, along Sapote Creek was a Hooded Tanager. Nemosia pileata was perched high in the canopy of a várzea woodland. An Amazonian species, it has yellow legs and irides. Males have black heads and sides of the neck giving them a 'hooded' appearance. Underparts are whitish, and upperparts are a blue-gray color. Prominent white lores are evident. Temperatures were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
