One of the first birds that we saw the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, along Sapote Creek was a Horned Screamer. Anhima cornuta was perched high in the canopy of a várzea woodland. This is a large, heavy-bodied bird that is related to ducks and geese. It flies with its neck outstretched. Note the long white horn on its forehead (a modified feather). It also has a wing spur at the bend of the wing. Temperatures were in the mid-60's with overcast skies.
