We spent the later part of the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, birding in Pucusana, a fishing village located 60 Kilometers south of Lima on the western coast of Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean. Brad photographed this pair of Humboldt Penguins, Spheniscus humboldti, as they frolicked in the ocean. The Humboldt is a medium-sized penguin with a proportionately large black head. A white border runs from behind the eye, around the black ear-coverts and chin, and joins at the throat. Underparts are whitish. A black breast-band extends down the flanks to the thigh. The bill is black with a white band near the tip. The lower mandible has a pink, fleshy colored base. The tongue has spines which are used to hold prey. Our group took a path from near Pucusana's fishing port that led to a cliff area overlooking the ocean. From this vantage point we could look down at roosting birds and the Pacific Ocean. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with bright, sunny skies and high humidity.
