We spent the later part of the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, birding in Pucusana, a fishing village located 60 Kilometers south of Lima on the western coast of Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean. Brad photographed an Inca Tern, Larosterna inca, as it flew over the ocean. Its sooty plumage, long dark tail, bright red bill, and white facial markings are visible here. Stiff-winged and erratic flight is characteristic of the species. Our group took a path from near Pucusana's fishing port that led to a cliff area overlooking the ocean. From this vantage point we could look down at roosting birds and the Pacific Ocean. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with bright, sunny skies and high humidity.
