We spent the later part of the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, birding in Pucusana, a fishing village located 60 Kilometers south of Lima on the western coast of Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean. These Inca Terns, Larosterna inca, were perched on their favorite roost, a guano covered cliff high above the Pacific and Pucusana. The sooty plumage, long dark tail, bright red bill and legs, and white facial markings of these terns make them easy to ID. Their stiff-winged flight is erratic and characteristic of the species. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with bright, sunny skies and high humidity.
