We spent the later part of the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, birding in Pucusana, a fishing village located 60 Kilometers south of Lima on the western coast of Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean. This pair of Inca Terns, Larosterna inca, was perched on their favorite roost, a guano covered rocky island jutting above the Pacific and Pucusana. This species of tern is identified by its dark gray body, white moustache ending with a curl in the auricular area, and reddish-orange bill and legs. Their stiff-winged flight is erratic and characteristic of the species. It breeds along the coasts of Peru and Chile and is restricted to the Humboldt current area. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with bright, sunny skies and high humidity.
