We birded along Yanallpa Creek, the narrowest and smallest creek that we traversed during our Amazon journey, the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2012. We found a Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Hydropsalis climacocerca, roosting on a snag near the water's edge. Females are distinguished by a shorter tail, lack of a white throat patch, and lack of white in the wings or tail. Large eyes aid this species in its nightly hunt for insects as does a large wide mouth. Temperatures were in the low 70's with clear skies and high humidity.
