We spent the later part of the afternoon of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along Yapara Creek, a tributary of the Amazon River located below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Large-billed Tern, Phaetusa simplex, that was perched on a snag in the river. In alternate plumage, the adult has a solid black crown. The mantle is dark gray as is its short tail. The throat, breast, belly, chin, and cheeks are white. The primaries to the bend of the wing are black. The yellow bill is large and distinctive. Legs and feet are yellow. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity. A group of terns is known as a 'ternery' or a 'U' of terns.
