The morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2012, we birded along the Ucayali River and along Supay Creek, which is located down river from the city of Requena. Brad photographed a Lineated Woodpecker, Dryocopus Lineatus, as it perched in the river-edge forest. Underparts are whitish with black barring. A thin white stripe runs from the base of the bill across the cheek and down the side of the neck, and white dorsal stripes form an open "V" on the back. The female has an all-red crest. Extensive black and gray is found on the sides of the face and reaches midline up to the forecrown. The throat is white with fine black barring. Remaining upperparts are black. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with overcast skies and high humidity.
