We spent the later part of the afternoon of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along Yapara Creek, a tributary of the Amazon River located below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Little Woodpecker, Veniliornis passerinus, a small yellowish-olive green colored woodpecker. Underparts have pale bars. The male has a red crown that extends to the nape and pale whitish lines above and below the auriculars. Unlike other similar and comparable sized members of Veniliornis, the Little Woodpecker lacks a contrasting yellow nape. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 80's with partly cloudy skies and high humidity.
