After birding at Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes (Lima, Peru) the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012, we drove to a beach area near Club Garza Real to look for shore birds before driving on to Pucusana. A trio of Peruvian Boobies, Sula variegata, was flying low over the Pacific Ocean where the species is restricted to the waters of the Humboldt Current off the coast of Peru and Chile. Wings are brown with narrowly tipped white coverts that give the wings a scaled effect. Head and underparts are white in these adults. Iris is brownish or a chestnut color. They plunge-dive and feed mainly on anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), a fish in the anchovy family. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with hazy skies and high humidity.
