We were on a pseudo-pelagic trip that departed from Pucusana the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012, and took us around some of the rocky islands in the bay and Pacific Ocean to bird. A pair of Peruvian Boobies, Sula variegata, was preening themselves on the rocky shores of a small island in the Pacific Ocean where the species is restricted to the waters of the Humboldt Current off the coast of Peru and Chile. Wings are brown with narrowly tipped white coverts that give the wings a scaled effect. Head and underparts are white in these adults. Iris is brownish or a chestnut color. They plunge-dive and feed mainly on anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), a fish in the anchovy family. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with sunny skies and high humidity.
