We birded in Pucusana, a fishing village located 60 Kilometers south of Lima on the western coast of Peru bordering the Pacific Ocean, the afternoon of Friday, January 13, 2012. This Peruvian Pelican, Pelecanus thagus, was swimming near the pier. It is dark in color with a white stripe extending from the top of the bill up to the crown and down the sides of the neck. Long tufted feathers are found on top of the head. Its large size (compare with the smaller Brown Pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis), long wings, long bill, large gular pouch and short tail characterize the species. Note the brightly colored bill. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with bright, sunny skies and high humidity.
