We spent the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad took a side view of a Red-and-white Spinetail, Certhiaxis mustelinus, that was perched out in the open. Upperparts are rufous, and underparts are white. The black bill is long and slender. Black lores, an all-rufous crown, and lack of a supercilium characterize the species. Certhiaxis spinetails are found along rivers in Amazonia and forage in marsh grasses, bushes, and other vegetation that occur low over water or in marshes on river islands. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this humid morning with overcast skies.
