The Aquamarina moved upriver after lunch on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, and relocated to a point about thirty minutes above the city of Reuqena. We didn't go out birding until late in the afternoon because of heavy rain. Once out, we explored Fosec Creek and ended the day with a long boat ride along a river island to look for Red-bellied Macaws. I photographed this group of Red-bellied Macaws, Orthopsittaca manilata, as they began to gather for their nightly roost. This is a small greenish macaw with a bare yellowish face and underwings. The maroon belly can be difficult to see. We found the Red-bellied's communal roost in a dying Moriche Palm grove. Dawn and dusk are the best times to find them here. Temperatures were in the low 80's with overcast skies, high humidity, and intermittent light rain.
