We birded along Sapote Creek the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, until lunchtime. Brad photographed a Red-capped Cardinal, Paroaria gularis, that was perched amid a tangle of branches along the water's edge. The crimson head, blackish lores and ocular region, shiny black upperparts, a white partial collar that extends up the neck sides from white underparts, and a black throat that extends to a point on the upper chest make this species quite distinctive. The upper mandible is black, while the lower is a pale flesh-color. Legs are dark grayish-black, and the iris is brownish-orange. Temperatures were in the low 80's with partly cloudy skies.
