We were up and birding bright and early along Yanallpa Creek the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2012. Yanallpa was the narrowest and smallest creek that we traversed and provided us with good birding opportunities. An adult Red-capped Cardinal, Paroaria gularis, is shown here. The crimson head, blackish lores and ocular region, shiny black upperparts, a white partial collar that extends up the neck sides from white underparts, and a black throat that extends to a point on the upper chest make this species quite distinctive. The upper mandible is black, while the lower is a pale flesh-color. Legs are dark grayish-black, and the irides are brownish-orange. Temperatures were in the upper 60's with partly cloudy skies.
