We spent the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Roadside Hawk, Buteo magnirostris, that was perched near the river. The adult has a pale iris, yellow cere, rufous primaries, and yellow feet and legs. Upperparts of this adult are gray. Its flight is interspersed with short glides as it moves from perch to perch. This photo shows a closeup of the bird's talons. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this humid morning with overcast skies.
