We were birding along Sapote Creek the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, when I took this photograph of some local women in a dugout boat. They were picking seed pods to make jewelry. It amazed me that they were sitting only inches above the water level (and staying dry!). Temperatures were in the mid-70's with overcast skies. Three groups of people that live south of Iquitos in the Ucayali River area are collectively known as the Chamas. Included here are the Shetebos, Shipibos, and the Cunibos people. Also located in Amazonia along the river are the ribereņos (mestizos), non indigenous people of European and Indian descent who have inhabited the area since the time of the rubber plantation.
