We spent the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, birding along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). This photograph of a Slate-colored Hawk, Leucopternis schistaceus, shows the bird's white banded black tail. With slate gray plumage and a reddish-orange cere and tarsi, the Slate-colored Hawk is quite distinctive. The iris is yellow. Temperatures were in the upper 70's with hazy skies and high humidity.
