We spent the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Colaptes punctigula, that was perched on a tree branch close to the river. The adult female has bronzy-green colored upperparts with black barring. Underparts are a pale yellow-olive color that are interspersed with black spotting. The upper breast has a reddish-orange tinge. The forehead and forecrown are black, while the hindcrown and nape are red. (The red crown patch is more restricted on a female.) A finely spotted black and white chin and throat help outline a white facial patch. The female lacks a red malar stripe. Temperatures were in the mid-70's on this humid morning with overcast skies.
