After lunch and a siesta on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, we headed downstream on the Ucayali River to El Dorado Creek for some late afternoon birding. A Violaceous Jay, Cyanocorax violaceus, was perched high above us in a váreza or floodplain forest. This is a light purplish-blue bird with a black face and throat. The nape is a paler purple. Its stout pointed bill is black with a tuft of stiffened feathers covering the nostrils. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with overcast skies.
