We were birding along Sapote Creek the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, when we photographed a Wattled Jacana, Jacana jacana, that was standing in a marshy area near the waterway. Long tarsi and long toes help support its weight on floating aquatic vegetation. The back and wing coverts are chestnut while the rest of the body is mainly black. Greenish-yellow flight feathers are visible when the bird is flying. Its yellow bill extends up into a red coot-like head shield and a reddish wattle. Temperatures were in the low 70's with overcast skies.
