We spent the morning and early afternoon of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon River below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marańón Rivers. Our skiff was heading along at a pretty good clip toward Yarapa Creek for some late afternoon birding when I took this photograph of our skiff. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies. Seasonal floodplain forests inundated by white water rivers that occur along the Amazon River Basin are known as várzea habitats. These habitats consist of forests, grasslands, lakes, flooded fields, and swamps. While in the Amazon, these were the habitat types we birded as opposed to terra firma where we only had one birding expedition.
