We spent the morning of Monday, January 16, 2012, birding along Yarapa Creek, a tributary of the Amazon (South Bank). Brad photographed a Yellow-tufted Woodpecker (Melanerpes cruentatus) that was perched on an exposed snag near the water's edge. This colorful female has black upperparts, chest, crown, and nape. The rump is white, the iris is pale, and an elaborate yellow facial tuft extends from a yellow eye ring to the nape. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this humid morning with hazy skies and high humidity.
